Quotations of the Week by Henri Nouwen

(Image from http://www.markdroberts.com/)

I've been reading Philip Yancey's excellent book Soul Survivor, and the final chapter is about priest and author Henri Nouwen. I also have a few books by Nouwen that I haven't read yet but very much would like to do so. You may read a short biographical sketch about him here: About Henri Nouwen.

I have read several shorter works of his, including an essay in a collection of Advent readings from which the Quotations of the Week have been copied.

You may also read about the Nouwen Society by clicking this hyperlink. I find Nouwen's writings challenging yet peaceful, a wonderful oasis in a busy life.
"The waiting person is a patient person. The word patience means the willingness to stay where we are and live the situation out to the full in the belief that something hidden there will manifest itself to us."

"But patient people dare to stay where they are. Patient living means to live actively in the present and wait there. Waiting, then, is not passive."

"...to be able to stand confidently (con-fide, with trust) in the presence of God...."

P.S. Anne at Imprisoned in My Bones recommends the free Daily Meditations from the Nouwen Society. I just signed up. :)

I love Henri Nouwen. He is one of my very favorite authors! Do you get his daily emails from the society? They always lift me up!

No, I don't -- I linked to his society in the post -- thanks for letting me know. I'll go check it out.

While you were commenting on my blog, I was commenting on yours! :) We're both up far too late tonight! Where in the country do you live?

There -- I'm signed up and will add it to the post, too. Thanks, Anne! :)

Susanne, I live in Wisconsin. Insomnia seems to be my closest acquaintance. I sleep for a few hours and then I'm wide awake for a few, and hopefully catch another hour before my day really begins.

Regarding Tiffany, the last I heard from her, she did find an apartment of her own and was all set up with food stamps and cash assistance, but was still searching for furniture to fill the house. She seemed very content with the new direction her life was heading.

The hardest part about my job is that I don't always get to see the same clients, sometimes I meet someone who touches me, and then I never see or hear from them again. So, when I do get to have any kind of follow up, it's always a joy!

I will certainly keep your family in my prayers. Don't feel alone if your children fight, that is natural and normal and believe me, although mine have many beautiful and wonderful qualities (as all children do), frequent fights resonate in our household as well.

Pax!
